Mātangireia Librarian

Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role

Reporting to the Kaitiaki Mātangireia you will undertake collection development and care of our physical and digital Mātangireia collections. You will coordinate digitisation projects, work with collection stakeholders, enrich and promote our collections. You will also support the work of our Poutiaki Taonga in working with our archives and art collection. 

Using your understanding of Te ao Māori and application of tikanga you will support the realignment of the collection and associated services to a Kaupapa Māori framework. 

This a full-time permanent role based at our Hillcrest campus. Salary will be in the range of $66,698 to $79,256 per year based on skills, knowledge and experience brought to the position.

With skills and knowledge in working with the GLAM sector and understanding of Kaupapa Māori in a tertiary context, you will be experienced in delivering an effective user experience in engaging with cultural collections. 

You will be an active team player, working closely with Library colleagues to co-create innovative solutions to develop, improve and promote our collections.  You will also be extremely agile in your approach to your mahi, being able to work across a broad range of tasks with a significant degree of independence. You will be comfortable making decisions on the fly, and active in inspiring others to do the same.

The University Library/Te Whare Pukapuka o Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato is an inspirational and innovative academic library situated in the heart of the campus in Te Manawa (the Student Centre) in Hamilton. Specific to this position, Mātangireia is a collection of Māori, Pacific, Aotearoa and Indigenous resources, associated spaces and services underpinned by Kaupapa Māori values. The role/Te mahi

As the Associate University Librarian (Māori and Strategic Development), you will lead the development and execution of the Library’s strategies for effective and enduring engagement with iwi, mana whenua and iwi Māori to advance Library services for Māori students and staff.

You will make a major contribution to library policy and planning as a member of the Library’s Executive Management Group. This role represents an exciting opportunity to join the University of Otago in working towards achieving Māori student and staff equity goals and ensuring Te Tiriti o Waitangi underpins all our Library’s work.

Key responsibilities of this role include:
•    Ensuring the Library connects with relevant Māori stakeholder engagement activities taking place across the University within both academic and service divisions.
•    Advising and leading on strategic developments and initiatives across Library departments.
•    Developing strategies and performance indicators to measure achievement towards Māori objectives.
•    Providing leadership and management for the Strategic Development team and ensuring staff capabilities and competences are in place.
•    Developing and overseeing the implementation of plans to raise the cultural competencies of staff.

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

You will be a proven leader with a strong capability to foster, create and maintain relationships.

Successful candidates will also have: 
•    Broad and deep experience of Te Ao Māori, including competency in Te Reo Māori and leadership in tikanga.
•    Substantial knowledge of Mātauranga Māori.
•    Extensive relevant experience working in a management team in a library, cultural or related service-oriented organisation.
•    Experience developing innovative solutions and practical implementations for strategic organisational and service change.
•    Ability to contribute to planning at operational and strategic levels.
•    Knowledge of digital and collection services within a university library context (an advantage)
•    Understanding of the research process and teaching and learning in a University setting (an advantage).
