This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team dedicated to embedding Te Ao Māori within our libraries and creating spaces where mātauranga Māori thrives. Ngā Kete Wānanga o Ōtautahi Christchurch City Libraries are hiring now for a Kaitakawaenga Māori – to join our team of dedicated Māori specialists. 

About the team | Ko te rōpū nei

The Kaitakawaenga Māori works within the Libraries’ Māori & Multicultural Services Team providing services that embed Ngā Aho our bicultural plan and enable meaningful community collaboration. Ngā Ratonga Māori are a committed team of Māori librarians who care for our physical collections and programme delivery throughout the libraries. 

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

This is an exciting, dynamic position within our Libraries & Information Unit, offering you the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team that helps shape and grow our bicultural approach. The Kaitakawaenga Māori is responsible for delivering excellent kaupapa Māori services and programmes across our libraries. Within a culture of collaboration and innovation your role will involve working with Library colleagues to develop and deliver kaupapa Māori services and public programmes for our Library customers and communities.

 About you | Ko Koe Tēnei

As Kaitakawaenga Māori, you will be comfortable being involved from a Te Ao Māori perspective in both formal and informal situations. You will lead with integrity and embrace the values of māramatanga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and whanaungatanga. 

We are looking for someone who has: 

  • Competence in te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga,
  • A commitment to cultural competency and a good foundation in Te Tiriti o Waitangi  
  • Self-motivation and is achievement-focused
  • Good organisational, planning and administrative skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills including communicating confidently with individuals and groups,
  • Experience working in a library environment or with Māori communities
  • Experience in developing, building and enhancing positive relationships
  • A tertiary qualification
  • A New Zealand driver’s licence

  • Hours of work – Monday to Friday with some after-hours work required as needed
  • Position – Full-time, permanent
  • Location – This position is primarily based at 180 Smith Street, Linwood, Christchurch but can work from any Christchurch City Library as required
  • Salary – The salary band for this position goes from $74,395 – $82,660 per annum based on a 40-hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
