Tūhoe moumou kai,
Tūhoe wasteful of food
Moumou taonga,
Wasteful of treasures
Moumou tangata ki te pō
Wasteful of people to the night
This is famous whakatauki about my people and speaks to our generosity and our willingness to fight.
I start with this as it speaks to the importance of pono and manaaki when interacting with our whanaunga from Hawaiiki.
During the week of 22 September 2025, LIANZA Conference: “Ko au te taiao, ko te taiao ko au”, was held at Takina in Wellington. It was fabulous to welcome and host our whanaunga from across the Pacific from Hawaii.
It was a privilege to see where they are at in their journey akin to Ngā Upoko Tukutuku and being able to share and discuss the challenges faced when implementing something focused on an indigenous world view. Lucky or not so Lucky Wellington was at its windy best with Tawhirimatea really giving a welcome to Wellington upon arrival at the airport to our manuhiri.
A big thanks to our colleagues at Te Papa who generously found a space for us to meet and explore cataloguing and subject headings from our different perspectives, followed by a mean lunch of yum cha at a Wellington institution Dragons. Also big thanks to Chris Cormack for being a great local guide and master of public transport in Wellington.
As always happens never enough time to finish the korero but keen on planning the next chance to come together to awhi and explore future pathways.
