This year’s recipient has shown exceptional dedication to the promotion and preservation of te reo Māori me ōnā tikanga. His efforts include mentoring new senior Māori staff as a te reo buddy, serving as a Kaikōrero at various significant events, and actively participating in wānanga reo.
His contributions extend to his role in the Te Tumu Herenga kapa haka group, where he shares his knowledge to help members learn te reo Māori. He has also been instrumental in liaising with iwi to provide access to taonga held in the university’s collections, ensuring these treasures are preserved and accessible for future generations. His work has significantly enriched the university’s resources and community, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and students alike.
He humbly acknowledged the collective efforts of his fellow kaimahi Māori, emphasizing their shared commitment to decolonizing and making a significant place for te ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and te reo Māori in their workplace. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities to overcome his feelings of whakamā and to speak on behalf of his organisation, highlighting the importance of these experiences in his personal and professional growth.
He also shared his passion for connecting whānau, hapū, and iwi with the kōrero of their ancestors through the university’s archives, a role he finds deeply moving and fulfilling.
