Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building, and reconciliation.

2019 is the International Year of Indgienous Languages.  Te Rōpū Whakahau advocates for the recognition and implementation of the Māori language in the information industry.
Te Reo Māori is the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand and was made an official language in 1987. Te Rōpū Whakahau are aware that an increasing number of people are speakers of te reo Māori, so information organisation should be able to provide their services in both English and Māori. One of the jointly sponsored projects was Ngā Upoko Tukutuku | Māori Subject Headings  This tool provides a structured path to a Māori world view within library and archival cataloguing and description.

Te Rōpū Whakahau is a registered organisation with the International Year of Indgienous Languages (2019IYIL) and is happy to share your event on the 2019 IYIL website.  Please email us
