11th International Indigenous Librarians Forum

Held every two years, the International Indigenous Librarians’ Forum provides an opportunity for indigenous information professionals to network, share and discuss best practice models in the interest of fostering and preserving indigenous languages, traditions, cultures and values within libraries, museums, archives and other educational institutions. In 2019, the Forum will return to the shores of Aotearoa New Zealand, in celebration of its twentieth year.
Kaupapa | Theme
The theme for IILF 2019 is “Tāmaki Herenga Waka” – which focuses on welcoming indigenous waka or vessels to return and tether within Tāmaki, providing a safe haven for discussions that will impact future generations of indigenous traditional knowledge and its’ acquisition, storage and use.
Sub-themes include:
- Hoea te waka – tāngata help navigate and guide the waka to ensure they get to the place they need to. If you have tāngata who do not have the skills, what happens to the direction of your waka?
- Whakarewa ake ōu whakaaro – tāngata need to lift their skills in all that they do, keeping up to date with what impacts, finding solutions and ensuring sustainability into the future.
- Ka mate ururoa, kei mate wheke – no work, no reward
- He au kei te moana e kore e taea – you can’t dodge the current at sea
Submission guidelines:
We are seeking high quality, thought provoking papers on any topic related to the Forum theme and/or subthemes. All INDIGENOUS persons working within GLAMI sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums and Information) are invited and encouraged to submit a proposal. Papers will be presented in panels of three. Each speaker will have 15 minutes to present followed by 5 minutes for Q&A. Immediately following panel presentations, time will be set aside for forum participants to discuss their learnings and create actions to take back to their workplace.
Following the forum, all presenters will be required to submit a final written paper (3000 words max, including 1 page bibliography) to be included in the conference proceedings.
Proposals should include:
– Title of proposed presentation
– An abstract of the proposed paper (250-300 words in English)
– Name(s) of presenter(s)
– Position or title of presenter(s)
– Employer or affiliated institution of presenter(s)
– Email address
– Indigenous / tribal affiliation of presenter(s)
– Short biographical statement(s) regarding the presenter(s), and photo
