Āu Mahi | What You Will Do

Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury has a vision of people prepared to make a difference: Tangata tū, tangata ora. ora. UC Puna | UC Library provides services and collections in support of the teaching, learning and research goals of the University and which reflect UC’s place in Aotearoa, the Pacific and beyond.

In the role of Kaitakawaenga you will deliver professional library services, with a focus on Māori staff and students in Te Rāngai Pūkaha | College of Engineering and Te Rāngai Pūtaiao | College of Science, including learning, teaching and research support and information services. The focus of the role is to provide specialist knowledge and expertise to support the needs of students and staff in academic research, study and enquiry into te ao Māori.

Mōu | Who You Are

This is a diverse and challenging role requiring technical library skills and a comprehensive knowledge of te ao Māori. To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • a comprehensive knowledge of tikanga Māori, particularly in relation to the provision of library services
  • knowledge of mātauranga Māori library resources
  • proficiency in te reo Māori
  • Experience delivering library services
  • strong interpersonal and team working skills, including ability to work collaboratively
  • demonstrable cultural competence and confidence to work in a bicultural and intercultural environment
  • an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how it relates to libraries


  • An approved tertiary postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Studies
  • Experience delivering library services in higher education
  • A proven track record of delivering information literacy programmes

Mahi Ngātahi | Who You Will Work With

The Kaitakawaenga will form key relationships with the other Kaitakawaenga, members of Te Puna Rakahau o Macmillan Brown | Macmillan Brown Library team and other library teams. In the wider University community, you will partner with colleagues in Te Waka Pākākano | Office of Māori, Pacific and Equity and work alongside the Kaiārahi Māori from Te Waka Pākākano to support the strategic direction of Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha.
