The LIANZA Children’s Book Awards, were presented last night in Wellington with the support and partnership of Hell Pizza.  Congratulations to all finalists and winners of the awards.
He mihi nui ki a ratou ngā kaiwhiriwhiri o te taonga Te Kura Pounamu me ngā taonga o Te Rōpū Whakahau i whakanuia i ngā rauemi tamariki i roto i te reo Māori. Ko Te Rangi Rangi ratou, ko Jermaine, ko Merearihi ngā kaiwhiriwhiri i tēnei tau. He mahi uaua tēnā, heoi, ka puta mai ngā toa o ēnei tohu whakahirahira īnapō.
Me mihi hoki ki a Chris Szekely mo tōna pukapuka ‘Tāhoe’, otira, ki ngā kaituhi, kaipikitia, kaiwhakatā, ki a rātou katoa, ngā mihi nui, mihi roa, mihi aroha hoki. Nō reira, e kī ana te korero, kia totoia ngā waewae o te mokopuna, ka whai taki.
Ngā Kaitiaki a Tama! Ki a māmā by Kawata Teepa and illustrated by Jim Byrt is the winner of the Te Reo Māori category, Te Kura Pounamu.
Te Rangi Rangi Tangohau is the Principal Librarian for Children’s Services at HB Williams Memorial Library, Gisborne and is a member of Te Rōpū Whakahau, the organisation uniting Māori librarians and information specialists in Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Rangi Rangi commented “this is an outstanding example of what is offered to Māori readers and others learning te reo Māori. We agreed this story would be well loved”.
The first of the four Te Rōpū Whakahau Literary Awards,  Te Tohu Taurapa is awarded for te wāhanga pikitia, the picture book section this year it goes to Ngā Kaitiaki a Tama! Ki a māmā.

The third award, Te Tohu Pounamu. This award changes annually in order to recognize excellence that would not otherwise be recognized in the other award categories.  This year we are awarding it to translator of one of the shortlisted titles. It goes to Tāhoe.
