Te Waka-a-Māui region invite you to come to our Te Rōpū Whakahau hui-ā-tau to be held at Puketeraki Marae, Karitāne. 17-21 March, 2020

This area, formerly known as Waikouaiti, is home to Rapuwai, Hāwea, and Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, and Kāi Tāhu.

Puketeraki Marae is situated on the corner of Apes Rd and Coast Rd in Karitāne and overlooks Huriawa Peninsula.      

Ki Uta Ki Tai [from the mountains to the sea] is our theme.

Ki Uta Ki Tai

The theme is an acknowledgment to Kāi Tahu resource management and restoration, recognizing the interconnectedness of environment, of people, of identity and well-being. This concept is well-known to Kāi Tahu and pertains especially to Kāi Tahu lands and waters.

EARLY BIRD REGISTRATIONS – EXTENDED

Early bird member registration: $520 until Friday 14 February 2020

Full registration: $600 after Friday 14 February 2020

This includes our 4-night stay at Puketeraki Marae, and all meals provided at the marae.

Programme

Our programme includes kaikōrero mātua highlighting local initiatives and Ngāitahutanga, and we hope to include waka activities and night star tour, weather permitting, so be sure to see our checklist below of suggested items to bring with you. Details for our programme are still being finalised, here are key points so far to help in your planning:

17 Rātū (Tuesday):

18 Rāapa (Wednesday): Haerenga day, Ki Uta Ki Tai Panel

19 Rāpare (Thursday): Kaikōrero, AGM

20 Rāmere (Friday): Kaikōrero, Hākari and Pō whakangahau

21 Rāhoroi (Saturday): Hui concludes with Poroporoaki at 10am

We will arrange transfers from and to Dunedin Airport. The airport is about a 30 minute drive from the city, and about an hour’s drive from Karitāne. Call for Presentations – Extended

We welcome presentations from the membership based around our theme of Ki Uta ki Tai and/or our guiding principles of whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga and te reo Māori.

Criteria:

We welcome group presentations.

Please send in your one paragraph abstract and 30 word bio to jacinta.beckwith@otago.ac.nz by Friday 14 February 2020 with Subject: Hui-ā-tau kōrero 2020

Call for Award Nominations

Meri Mygind – Wahine Toa – presented to a female, Māori member who has shown initiative, creativity, dedication and promotion of Māori services within libraries, archives and information repositories and within Te Rōpū Whakahau.

Robin Hakopa – Te Reo Māori – presented to a member who has shown initiative, creativity, dedication and promotion of Te Reo and Tikanga Māori within libraries and within Te Rōpū Whakahau.

Nominations for both of these awards must be written and can be submitted at anytime during the year, with the closing date of one week prior to hui-ā-tau. Email nominations to trw@trw.org.nz

Student Awards – at each Hui-ā-tau, Te Rōpū Whakahau formally recognises recent graduates who have completed Libraries, Information Management, ICT, Archives, Te Reo Māori or Mātauranga Māori related study, see more at https://trw.org.nz/awards-events/student/

Reminder – Toipoto Scholarship & hardship grant

Te Rōpū Whakahau offers four annual scholarships worth $500 to assist personal members to attend a national event that supports mātauranga Māori and/or indigenous information initiatives such as our Hui-ā-tau. Applicants must be a current personal member and have been a member for at least 12 months at the time of application. Download the Toipoto Application Form.

Te Rōpū Whakahau offers one sponsorship annually as part of our commitment to supporting members to attend Hui ā-tau.  Sponsorship is open to all individual members of the association, to give support to those who may be unable to attend due to financial difficulty. Marae Etiquette for Puketeraki

The wharenui is named Huirapa and is booked for our stay from Tuesday to Saturday – four nights. Mattresses, pillows, sheets and pillowcases are provided but please bring your own sleeping bag or blanket. No food is permitted in the wharenui and please do not wear shoes inside the wharenui. Please indicate on your registration form if you would like to stay with us on the marae, or, if you are arranging your own accommodation. For suggestions of alternative accommodation see below.

Further marae etiquette from the Puketeraki website:

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be held in the wharekai, named Maririhau. We will also offer light morning and afternoon tea snacks; and you are welcome to make yourself tea and coffee in the wharekai. Please include any special dietary requirements in your registration form.

There is a cafe and general store called Salt & Sugar, about a 15 minute walk from the marae.
